Tuguegarao City – An Indonesian Catholic Priest assigned to Lubuagan, Kalinga, was shot and killed by one of the three men as who attended him as he was preparing to celebrate Palm Sunday Mass in Barangay Mabungtot there, police and military officials said.

Senior Supt. Severino Cruz, Kalinga police director, said Rev. Fr. Franciskus Madhu, 31, was preparing for the 5:30 p.m. Mass when the suspect identified as a farmer, Nestor Wailan, shot him with an M-16 rifle.

Madhu, a native of Flores, one of the islands of East Nusa Tenggara province in
Indonesia, died from five bullet wounds in the body. The bullets pierced his abdomen and hit vital organs, reports said.

Cruz, quoting police reports, said Wailan had a brief conversation with Madhu and told the priest, “Humanda ka (Get ready)!” Wailan allgedly shot Madhu as he entered the Mabungtot Primary School, where he was to say Mass.

Wailan, Cruz said, fled on foot with his companions, one of whom was identified as Joel Waingan.

The motive has yet to be established, Cruz said.

A report from the Society of the Divine Word (SVD), to which Madhu belonged as a missionary, described the suspect as having criminal record.

“It seems that the attacker had personal problems and was wanted by the police,” said a report issued by Fr. Antonio Pernia, SVD superior general.

Wailan is a brother of three wanted crime suspects in Mabungtot and Canao villages in Lubuagan, Cruz said. Police are hunting their eldest brother, Ispiking Wailan, after he was accused of killing a resident of Sitio Manangol in Mabungtot.

Cruz said Tabuk Bishop Prudencio Andaya, Jr. went to Lubuagan to claim Madhu’s remains.

He said Lubuagan Parisheoners had described Madhu as kind, helpful, industrious and outspoken.

Rev. Jerome Adriatico, SVD provincial superior, said Madhu had been engaged in missionary work in the area since 2005.

He said police told him initial reports indicated Madhu was gunned down at random for “no apparent reason.” “He has not even gone home for vacation, as we missionaries are given the privilege to go on vacation after three years of missionary work in a specific area,” Adriatico said.

Madhu was born on May 13, 1976. He entered the SVD novitiate in 1995 and made his first vows in 1997. He took his perpetual vows in 2003 and was ordained a priest in 2004. He was co-pastor of the Lubuagan Catholic Mission Station in Kalinga.
